Death by Book Avalanche

Hello, my name is Roxanne and I live in sunny Cornwall, UK. I have a very large passion for reading and have done so since I was really little, so you will very rarely see me without a book nearby. I enjoy all sorts of books...Horrors, Mysteries, Thrillers, Erotica, GLBT, Romance, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Self-Help, Fantasy and Sci-Fi...there really isn't much that I won't read.

I love animals! I have two beautiful dogs, Eli and Loki which are Husky/Border Collie cross.

As well as reading I love to surf the internet, talk about books, write about books, go to gigs, draw, listen to music and spend time with my family.

Feel free to add me as a friend as I enjoy meeting new people, discussing books and comparing reviews.

Not all of the books I have read are listed on my profile due to a Facebook app, that I used before Booklikes, crashed and I lost everything...I saved as much as I could :)

House of Small Shadows

House of Small Shadows - Adam Nevill1 Star Rating

I absolutely hate not finishing books, I really do, so I persevered with this one right to the end (mostly with the hope that it'll get better) but unfortunately I really didn't enjoy this. Instead of this one, I recommend reading The Ritual as I thought that one was a lot better.
My main reason for giving this one such a low rating was because I didn't understand it at all. None of it made sense! When I first started reading this book I was totally into it, I enjoy reading about freaky ass dolls as they creep me the hell out...I like that. The dolls weren't even the main focus of the story...now that I mention it i'm not even sure what the main focus of the story was. I didn't like any of the characters, the MC was incredibly annoying with her constant 'This happened...but maybe it didn't...but then this definitely happened...oooh maybe it didn't'. Boooooored.
I have a question; 'What the f*ck did happen woman'?

Razor Wire

Razor Wire - Lauren Gallagher Yay! I was approved for an ARC!

Mojo

Mojo - M. Jet This was a very quick, enjoyable read which was both cute and saucy at the same time. It was about trying to get the spark back into a relationship after marriage and children. I liked the characters and enjoyed reading about their new erotic journey on the road to a HEA.

Rules to Live By

Rules to Live By - Heidi Belleau, Lisa Henry, Anna Zabo, Cari Z., Dianne Fox, Anah Crow Yaaaay! I got approved for an ARC on Netgalley! :)

Chimera Book Two

Chimera Book Two - Phil Gomm ARC received from Netgalley

✪✪✪ 3 Star Rating ✪✪✪

Like the first part this was a very fast paced and action filled read, however, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first. Although the writing had improved, there were less errors and you were drawn further into the story, it just got way too complicated and messy for me.
It got to the point where I just thought that even the characters don't even know whose side they are on, they just swapped sides continuously, so many times I lost count and everything just started to confuse me. There were new characters being introduced all the time with bizarre names that within a page I had forgotten who they were.
All of those points are a shame as Chimera has great potential!
I thought the way every chapter ended was really good in the way that it held my attention and made me want to know what happens next.
I just hope the 3rd book will be less messy.

Teddy in the Park

Teddy in the Park - Jenny Tulip Due to having to go for her jabs, my baby has been to the Dr's quite a few times and it's safe to say we only look forward to one thing when we get there and that's this book. It's in the reading corner every time we visit and when I show it to her her little face just lights up. It's such a bright, colourful, happy book that I go out of my way to find it when we are in the waiting room. The adventures of Teddy are fun to read for your little one and there are plenty of different characters to involve and point to.
Unfortunately I can't give a solid rating of the book's potential as my baby is way too young for this yet...she does like the pretty pictures though.

Chimera Book One

Chimera Book One - Phil Gomm I received an ARC ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

✪✪✪✪ 4 Star Rating ✪✪✪✪

This story is about a young boy called Kyp who ends up being drawn into a whole new world where all lost things go to. It is suitable for both adults and children, however, there are some strong horror elements so I would perhaps recommend going through this book to see if it's suitable for your own child, it's personal preference afterall.
I have to say I really enjoyed this story and at only 100 pages long you can jump right into the next one straight after. I found this to be really original and I liked all of the characters. It is absolutely packed full of action, each chapter ending with a BOOM to keep you hooked (which definitely worked for me).
I would say it needs a bit more editing but the mistakes only mildly effected my enjoyment and so it deserves a full 4 stars.

The Man Cave

The Man Cave - L.A. Witt Free ebook from All Romance ebooks

✪✪✪ 3 Star Rating ✪✪✪

A nice, short, smutty read about two young, hot guys getting it on in a cave.
Very yummy and it's free!
What more could you want?

You Are So Undead to Me

You Are So Undead to Me - Stacey Jay 2 Star Rating

I picked this one up from the library because it sounded good and I love books about zombies.
The idea is fantastic! It's original in the sense that it's about zombies crying out for help and needing assistance with their unfinished business rather than trying to eat your brains...I liked that.
Unfortunately for me the idea just didn't come together. I found the MC to be very annoying and the plot was continuously battered due to her wanting to be popular...it was just one big popularity contest. I found the other characters rather shallow and were immensely over shadowed by the MC. Just by looking at the front cover I should of expected that whole American high school princess drama but I guess I didn't expect it to be that bad.
So much could of been done with such a fantastic idea, it just wasn't for me.

Horns

Horns - Joe Hill This one is definitely gonna stick in my head for some time. Now I've decided on a rating I'm gonna have to think hard about an upcoming review...as I have no idea where to start.

Update: 17/05/15

★★★★★ 5 Star Rating

The sign of a truly excellent book IMO is that it will stay with you for a long time after you have read it and this is certainly one of those books. It was, in many ways, a perfect read for me. My reasons are that it is dark, disturbing, vile, twisted, extreme, evil and just plain disgusting...I loved it. This is a very well written, original story about good vs evil and about the deepest, darkest secrets hidden in the minds of those around us. I'm so glad I picked this up from the library, it sounded like my sort of thing and it certainly was.

Out After Dark

Out After Dark - Brandon R. Luffman 4 Star Rating

Ooooooooh those chills!

For such a short story (and I mean REALLY short) this was excellent, I really enjoyed this!!
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because of it's length...I really wanted more.
This story had more twists and turns in it than most of the full length novels I have read and it kept me guessing all the way through. You just don't know who is good and who is bad, you don't know whose side to be on and when you think you've worked it out there's another twist!
Plus it has Vampires...awesomeness!
The writing was great, the pace was fast and the editing was very well done.
If this author ever does a full length novel I would want to read it; no doubts there at all.
Highly recommended!

Glitter

Glitter - Ayla Starr Every so often I would see this book appear on my home page, I was always intrigued by it...but I never did anything about it (I don't know why). After reading many glowing reviews I thought I would find out how to get myself a copy. It's currently free on Smashwords.
I usually enjoy short stories most of the time but I always have an issue with lack of depth due to how short some of them are. I was a bit dubious about this one as it's so short...and I mean short short.

I give it 5 Stars all the way! I don't think a short story has ever hit me so hard as this one has. The writing is beautiful and the story is so heartfelt.
It teaches the reader about prejudice, love, loss and hope...truly beautiful.
I think everyone should have some glitter in their lives.

Night Shadows: Queer Horror

Night Shadows: Queer Horror - Greg Herren, J.M. Redmann, Nathan Burgoine, Jewelle Gomez, Jeffrey Ricker, Victoria A. Brownworth, Lee Thomas, Carsen Taite, Felice Picano, Vince Liaguno, Steve Berman, Carol Rosenfeld, Michael Rowe, Lisa Girolami I found this book whilst browsing the shelves at my local library, the front cover intrigued me and the genre even more so. I love horror novels and when I noticed that this had a LGBT theme I thought 'how brilliant!', I didn't hesitate to pick this up. Once I got the book home I decided to look up some reviews and noticed that the majority were 4 and 5 stars...I was excited as I thought I had found a gem. Well...I'm the minority.

Me whilst reading Night Shadows...

image

I was so disappointed and really thought I must have missed something due to all of the glowing reviews but I only liked 4 out of the 14 stories. My favourite was definitely 'Ordinary Mayhem' which was the longest story in the book. I thought it was gripping, gruesome and positively twisted. Unfortunately I couldn't give this book any more than 2 stars because as a collection this was pretty poor. I don't recommend purchasing this book. As far as I know 'Ordinary Mayhem' is being released as a full length novel so I highly recommend just waiting for that (I wish I did).

I found the majority of the stories either confusing, repetitive, dry or just plain pointless to be honest...the ones that were a couple of pages in length just had me sighing in frustration.
This, for me, would not be a re-read.

The Man Who Came Too Much

The Man Who Came Too Much - Ellie Saxx ★★★★ 4 Star Rating ★★★★

Me whilst reading this ebook:

image

OMG this was hilarious! And filthy! Oh so filthy!
You just have to read this.

It's smutty, it's hot and it's enough to get you drenched.
Are you male? Female? It doesn't matter...this guy just wants to cover you from head to toe.

image

I guess you could say that this guy has a special gift as in just one go he can fill jugs, pringle cans and thigh high boots.
Let's just say you're in for a surprise...in the face!

image

Wanna get it on with this guy? Don't forget to bring a spare pair of clothes...you're gonna need them:

A night with this guy (Before and after)

A well written short story filled to the brim with smut...read it! It's feckin' hilarious!

The Universe Doesn't Give a Flying Fuck About You

The Universe Doesn't Give a Flying Fuck About You - Johnny B. Truant 4 Stars

My first reaction after finishing this short ebook?

image

Duuuuuuuude!

This made me feel so small...

image

The truth being that the Universe doesn't give a fuck about you! Whether you live or die, whether you're happy or sad, or whether you're at peace or war.
If you're like me and you're afraid to take chances because you have a fear of failure or you're afraid of what other people may think then you need to read this...it may be the kick in the pants that you need.

It was just too short...I wanted more as it was very inspiring.

It's time to do something epic! It's time to do something amazing! It's time to be...
