The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson This book was more of a personal challenge for me, I don't normally go for this type of read but I was asked to join some friends at the cinema to see the film. Being me I have to read the book before I watch the film, so it was challenge on!

I thought the story had a VERY slow start to it and nothing much really happened until almost half way in. The background information on Journalism and Swedish financial empires, politics...blah blah...waaaaay over my head sort of thing was very lengthy and detailed. There were times when I had the urge to just give up, if I hadn't of set a personal challenge for myself then I probably would of left it. It seemed there was no detail left out, details that had no influence on the story and I felt were just there to annoy, you don't need to know every little thing. 'He made some coffee, made two sandwiches which consisted of..., made some more coffee, went for a walk in the snow, made another pot of coffee...then some information is discovered, someone asks what it is, oh I can't tell you yet..., makes some coffee, has a sandwich...' FRUSTRATING...it's like DO SOMETHING!!

The second half of the book got more interesting and it kept me reading to the last page. I gave it 3 stars as the idea of the story was very clever and very well thought out, it felt original (but then again I haven't read many mystery novels so it's hard to say). I must say I did like the characters and for this reason I would read the next book in the series.

If I break down my rating I would give 1.5 stars for the first half of the book, every detail just seemed to be repeated on every page, I would give the second half 3 stars as I did enjoy it and interesting stuff did actually start to happen.

Overall, it was an OK read but in my personal opinion...nothing special.
